OUR 2026 SEASON

Season 2026 Kate Champion

Welcome to our 2026 Season

A season of bold voices and fresh perspectives, Black Swan’s 2026 program showcases iconic reinventions, daring new commissions, and stories that speak directly to the world we live in today.

In 2026 we begin with an iconic muse’s scintillating response to a prophetic fairytale, followed by the return of a smash hit, tour de force portrait of a trailblazer.

We then move to a bold new adaptation of a world-renowned WA novelist’s searing coming-of-age tale, and a tender exploration of parental love and the complexities of mental health. A brand-new WA commission takes us on an ai-inspired, kafka-esque search for “a life well-lived”.

As the state theatre company, our work goes far beyond Perth. After a sell-out season in 2025, Raised in Big Spirit Country heads to Broome in September – home to the people whose music and stories first inspired it.

This vibrant concert event celebrates both the legendary artists of the region and the next generation carrying their music forward.

From there, an exciting co-production with Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company asks what is at stake when we lose touch with our roots and sense of integrity.

We’ll also reconnect with communities across WA as The Pool tours regionally, sharing this joyful, site-specific, community-inspired tale to audiences far beyond the city, before returning to Perth for a strictly limited season.

I passionately believe our responsibility as a State Theatre Company is to commission, develop and present stories that reflect who we are today and respond to the social and geopolitical realities we face in our modern world.

That doesn’t mean ignoring the past. Quite the contrary. We acknowledge and refer to the past through the lens of contemporary retelling.

Every work this season is less than ten years old and every voice is Australian.

I’m proud that Black Swan continues to lead in bringing fresh voices, local experiences and thought-provoking perspectives to the stage.

Enjoy!
